Both of our kids are passionate rowers at the Litchfield Hills Rowing Club (LHRC). I must admit that until a few years ago, I knew absolutely nothing about rowing! Fast forward to the present day and my knowledge and love for crew has grown out of our daughter's devotion to the sport and this club. By day, I am a dedicated teacher at HarBur Middle School in Region 10, where I get to inspire young minds. By evening, I am a proud rowing mom, cheering on my freshman daughter who is on the varsity team at LHRC. Her journey with the club has been nothing short of remarkable, and we are incredibly grateful for the LHRC community and all it has brought to our family, especially our daughter. Our son enjoys rowing during the summer months in his off season from basketball. Bantam Lake has become our home away from home as we travel back and forth to practice. We feel lucky to be able to enjoy the beauty the lake and town has to offer. It is my honor to serve as the President of Litchfield Hills Rowing Club. Literally the day after putting our son on a plane to Chicago we started our Learn-to-Row program. Jennifer stopped rowing…and our son (Eli) and daughter (Becca, aka Flippy) subsequently joined my craziness on the water. I’m not at all a morning person. But the beauty and calm of the lake, the concentration required that forces you to clear your mind totally, the eagles soaring overhead, snow glistening in the air make rowing as meditative and mentally relaxing as it is physically exhausting. It makes it totally worth getting up way before dawn 3 or 4 times a week! And I’ve had an added bonus: Racing with Eli and with Becca. Racing together is great family fun that I urge you to experience. Youth Rowers, encourage your parents to give rowing a try. Parents, come join a Learn-to-Row program, learn what your kids are talking about, train and enjoy beautiful Bantam Lake together, and consider sharing the thrill of a row down the river with the crowds giving you that extra support they show for parent-child races. Her journey in rowing began in 1997 as an athlete, later transitioning to coaching after college and eventually serving as a program director at Yale's nonprofit Community Rowing Program, where she helped expand access to the sport for athletes of all backgrounds. With a deep passion for youth athletics and fostering an inclusive and supportive team environment, she has played a key role in the club’s growth and success. Holly has coached athletes of all levels and understands both the technical and personal aspects of the sport. She has also been instrumental in developing financial aid initiatives, ensuring that rowing remains accessible to all athletes. In addition to her work at LHRC, she has a strong background in youth development and leadership training, incorporating social-emotional learning principles into athletic programs. Beyond rowing, Holly brings extensive experience in both the nonprofit sector and business leadership. She currently serves as Vice President of a laboratory equipment company, where she manages operations and strategic initiatives. Her nonprofit experience includes serving as both Secretary and President of the Southbury Women's Club, where she played a key role in community service and fundraising initiatives. She remains a member of the organization, continuing to support its mission. He has served on the board of another integral non-profit in Litchfield, and appreciates the importance of caring for community assets. In 2001, he left financial services and joined Project Graphics as CFO, where he is involved in all aspects of the business. Steve came to rowing later in life via LHRC’s Learn to Row Program, and his love for the sport grew. After kayaking Litchfield County’s lakes and rivers for many years, Steve decided to seek a new challenge. “I was also getting tired of watching all those sculls passing me by. So I decided if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!” “At LHRC, I found good people, a great workout, and the challenge of learning a brand new skill. I’m also hoping to be proof you can do this sport forever.” The highlight of Steve’s competitive experience was rowing in the Director’s Challenge Men’s 4x at the 2022 Head of the Charles. Off the water, Steve coached non-profit organizations in fundraising. Following a long career in nonprofit management and consulting, Steve also served on the board of the Connecticut Community Foundation.
